FINAL HAND STORY

Stand and be Counted

We’re not going to belabour the point, or try to make more out of it than what it is, but if you’re somewhat new to the whole casino experience, and blackjack specifically, when you’re confronted with a pair of eights, your thought process should be short, sweet and to the point. No deliberating, just split. As a GOM reader, you made us proud—for the most part. While over half of you voted with as much thought as the situation in the game calls for, there were a few disappointing few who scratched their heads, stroked their chins and went down the wrong road. It’s simple mathematics. If you have two eights and “Hit!” comes out of your mouth, you’re treading on thin ice. But surprisingly, just as many of you wanted to double-up. Please. Maybe it’s your sick sense of humour, but the only one not laughing in the casino will be you if you go there, so to speak. You’d be better of standing, even though no one opted for that choice.

In blackjack, if you have a pair of 8s you should...

Split - 56 percent
Hit - 22 percent
Double-up - 22 percent
Stand - 0 percent

So let it be a lesson to you all. And like we said, you don’t have to explain it in any flowery, long-winded language—although we’ve done our best here. When you have a pair of eights (or aces as long as we’re at it), split and let the good times roll. And don’t forget to be gracious and tip your dealer.
