The prestigious Aussie Millions Series is under way with the action commencing last Thursday at the Crown Casino in Melbourne. This year’s tournament is particularly big and has already set a record as the largest live poker competition in Australian gaming history. The first tournament of the series attracted a large field of 1,143 entrants with a buy-in of $1,100 AUD and generated a prize pool of over $1 million AUD.
The series continues up until January 31st and will feature 20 tournaments before the end of the month, though attention will mainly focus on the $10,000 no-limit holdem’ main event, starting on the 24th. Other events worth looking out for include the $100,000 no-limit holdem’ challenge, the H.O.R.S.E event and the pot-limit Omaha event. Both tournaments feature a $10,000 buy-in and the latter is a new feature on the 2010 roster.
The Aussie Millions main event will be hoping to replicate the successes of the previous year when champion Stewart Scott triumphed over a field of 681 players and netted a prize of $4,552,130. in the process he beat finalist Peter Rho heads up and also had to negotiate his way past up and coming player Elliot Smith and old timer Barny Boatman. The holdem’ challenge was won by Davide Steicke and Alexander Kostritsyn clinched the H.O.R.S.E event.
The Aussie Millions is considered the sixth biggest poker tournament in the world and in 2009 hosted what turned out to be the largest ever cash game, consisting of a $1 million AUD buy-in. This year over 400 international visitors are expected at the series.
