While Penn National Gaming Inc. may have faced a string of problems in getting their Columbus casino up and running, over in Toledo, plans for their other new development are going swimmingly.
The site is not scheduled to open until 2012 – with ground not even being broken until the tail-end of this year – but already Toledo tourism officials are using the casino as part of their pitch to convention organisers and business-planners.
The development is widely considered to be a huge potential boon to the area, with Toledo hotels previously having to organise special bus services to shuttle guests off to casinos in nearby Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, to get their gaming fix.
The Penn National group successfully purchased the 44-acre cite – located along the Maumee River just south of downtown Toledo – after their plans were approved by Ohio voters last fall, and the president of the city’s convention and visitors bureau, David Nolan, welcomed their plans, saying: “This puts Toledo on the [gaming] map,”
Having the city behind one of their casino developments will certainly come as a welcome respite for Penn National after another one of their projects, originally planned for construction in the Columbus’ Arena District, faced stern opposition from local businesses, forcing them to relocate to a dilapidated downtown neighbourhood. |
