Van Persie nearing Man Utd transfer
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson expects striker Robin van Persie to have signed for the club in time for the Red Devils’ Premier League opener against Everton on Monday.
United have agreed a £24m fee with Arsenal for the Dutch striker, scorer of 44 goals in 57 appearances for club and country last season, with the player expected to agree a contract soon.
“The fee is agreed and he’s on his way down from London,” said Ferguson on Thursday afternoon. “He’s set for a medical this afternoon and his agent is in discussions with us. I’m sure he’ll be available for Monday’s game.”
Ferguson feels the addition of van Persie will bring his strikeforce close to the strength of the club’s famous collection of forwards in their 98/99 treble-winning season.
The Scot says that Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were the four best frontmen in Europe at the time, and that he was approaching a similar selection of strikers ahead of the coming campaign.
“I’m getting towards that level now,” he said. “Hopefully I pick the right combinations.”
